West Geauga Middle School had two students advance to the State Power of the Pen Competition, seventh graders Gabby Ohlsen and Janna Winningham. To give perspective, 2,500 students participated in the district level tournament. Then, that number was narrowed down to 1,200 students, who moved onto the regional tournament. Finally, only 500 writers qualified for the state tournament. Of those 500 students, only 50 seventh graders wrote well enough to move onto the fourth round. We are pleased to announce that both Gabby and Janna made it to the fourth round, where only the strongest, most creative writers progressed. Of those 50 writers, only the top 12 are recognized. Our own Janna Winningham came in 7th place in the state of Ohio as the top writers for Power of the Pen 2023. Congratulations to both girls! Thank you to teacher, Mrs. Lisa Zimmer for her leadership and support of the Power of the Pen team. We are so proud of you all!
